1. Who we are
Greatproductreview.com is an independent product comparison website operated by Great Product Review. In this policy, “we”, “us” and “our” mean that company.
For the purposes of the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation, we are the data controller for the personal data described here. If you have any question about how we handle your information, send us a message through our contact form.
2. What we collect
We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not sell anything directly. Most of what we collect is the ordinary technical data any website receives, plus analytics used to understand which of our pages are useful.
Collected automatically when you visit
- Device and browser data — browser type and version, operating system, screen size, language.
- Network data — IP address (truncated or anonymised where our analytics provider supports it), approximate location derived from it at city or region level.
- Usage data — which pages you viewed, how long you spent, which links and buttons you clicked, and the page or advertisement that referred you.
- Advertising identifiers — cookie or similar identifiers used to measure whether a visit that began with one of our advertisements resulted in a click on a partner's link.
Collected only when you give it to us
- Contact details and message content — if you write to us about a correction, a question or a partnership, we receive whatever you put in that message, including your email address.
We do not knowingly collect special category data (health, biometrics, political opinions, and so on), and we do not ask for payment details. No purchase is ever completed on this website — when you follow a link to a merchant, anything you enter there is handled under that merchant's own privacy policy, not ours.
3. How we use it
- To operate and serve the website, and to keep it secure and available.
- To understand which comparisons and guides people find useful, so we know what to write, correct and update.
- To measure advertising — specifically, whether a visit that arrived from an advertisement went on to click a partner's link. This is how we know whether our advertising spend is working.
- To reply to you when you contact us, and to correct our pages when you tell us something is wrong or out of date.
- To comply with our legal obligations and to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
We do not use your data to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.
4. Legal bases we rely on
Where the UK or EU GDPR applies, we rely on the following legal bases:
| What we do | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Serving the website and keeping it secure | Legitimate interests — running a website that works and is not abused |
| Analytics and advertising cookies | Your consent, given through our cookie banner. You can withdraw it at any time. |
| Replying to an email you sent us | Legitimate interests — responding to a person who contacted us |
| Keeping records required by law | Legal obligation |
How consent works here. This site runs no Google tags and no third-party advertising pixels. The only non-essential cookie is a first-party click-tracking cookie, set only on the pages described in section 6. US state privacy laws work on an opt-out basis rather than requiring you to accept cookies before you can read a page, so there is no consent banner in the way. You can block or delete the cookie in your browser at any time, and nothing on this site stops working if you do.
6. Analytics and click tracking
We run no Google Analytics, no Google Ads tag, and no third-party advertising pixel anywhere on this site. No advertising network receives data about your visit from us.
On the pages we run advertising campaigns to, we use our own click-tracking software on a subdomain we control, track.greatproductreview.com. It is self-hosted, so this data stays with us rather than going to an outside analytics or advertising company. On our other pages it does not run at all.
- What it does, where it runs: a small script records the visit and stores an identifier, so that a later click can be matched back to it. When you click through to a partner product you pass through our own redirect, which logs the click and sends you straight on to the merchant.
- What it records: the identifier, your IP address, your browser and device type, the page you were on, the campaign or source that brought you, and which link you clicked. It does not record your name, your email address, or anything you have not given us.
- Why: so we know which pages and which links actually lead to a sale. That is how this site is paid for.
- What every page records regardless: our web host keeps ordinary server logs — page, time, IP address, user-agent. Every website receives this by default; we use it to keep the site working and secure.
Blocking cookies or scripts in your browser stops the click tracking. Nothing on the site stops working if you do.
7. Affiliate networks and merchants
Some links on this site are paid links. When you click one, the merchant or its affiliate network typically sets a cookie so it can tell that the visit came from us and pay us a commission if you buy. That cookie is set by them, on their site, and is governed by their privacy policy rather than this one.
We receive commission reports that tell us how many sales a link produced and what we are owed. Those reports do not identify individual buyers to us. We never see your name, address, card details or order contents.
Which links are paid, and how that affects what we recommend, is set out in full in our affiliate disclosure.
9. Do we sell or share your data?
We do not sell personal information for money.
However, under California law the words “sell” and “share” are defined broadly, and the use of advertising cookies for cross-context behavioral advertising can fall within “sharing” even where no money changes hands. To the extent our Google advertising cookies amount to “sharing” under the CCPA as amended by the CPRA, you can stop it by declining advertising cookies in our banner, by using your browser's privacy controls, or by sending a request through our contact form with “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” in the subject line.
We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.
10. How long we keep it
- Click-tracking records: kept on our own tracking subdomain for up to 24 months, so we can reconcile clicks against commission statements, and deleted after that.
- Server logs: kept for a short period for security and troubleshooting, then discarded.
- Emails you send us: kept for as long as needed to deal with the matter, and then for up to 24 months in case you follow up.
- Records we must keep by law: for the period the law requires.
11. International transfers
Google and some of our other providers process data outside the UK and the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Where that happens, the transfer is covered by an approved safeguard — typically the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, or the provider's certification under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. You can ask us for details of the safeguard that applies to a particular provider.
12. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights over your personal data:
- Access — ask what we hold about you and get a copy.
- Correction — have inaccurate data fixed.
- Deletion — ask us to erase data we no longer need to keep.
- Restriction — ask us to pause processing while a dispute is resolved.
- Objection — object to processing we base on legitimate interests, and object at any time to processing for direct marketing.
- Portability — receive data you gave us in a machine-readable format.
- Withdraw consent — at any time, without affecting anything done before you withdrew it.
- Non-discrimination — we will not give you a worse experience for exercising any of these rights.
To exercise any of them, email our contact form. We will respond within one month (GDPR) or 45 days (CCPA), and we will tell you if we need longer. We may ask you to confirm your identity first, and an authorised agent may act for you if you have given them written permission.
13. If you are in the EU or the UK
You have the right to complain to your data protection authority. In the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). In the EU it is the supervisory authority in the country where you live or work. We would rather you came to us first so we can put things right, but you do not have to.
14. If you are in California or another US state
California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected, used and disclosed; to delete it; to correct it; to opt out of its sale or sharing; and to limit the use of sensitive personal information. We do not collect sensitive personal information as that term is defined in the CPRA.
Residents of other states with comprehensive privacy laws — including Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah and Texas — have comparable rights. Use the same contact address in section 18 and tell us which state you are writing from.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If you send a Global Privacy Control signal from your browser, there is nothing for it to opt you out of.
15. Children
This site is written for adults buying consumer electronics and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us personal data, tell us through the contact form and we will delete it.
16. Security
The site is served over HTTPS. We keep the number of people with access to any personal data small, use reputable providers, and do not store payment data at all because no transaction happens here. No website can promise perfect security, but we take the measures that are reasonable for a site of this kind.
17. Changes to this policy
We update this policy when our practices change or when the law does. The date at the top of the page always reflects the current version. If a change materially affects your rights we will say so prominently on the site rather than quietly editing the text.
